Lonomia Obliqua, Deadly Caterpillar

Frankly, I never have heard about deadly catepillars. Lonomia obliqua is a catepillar that no one should ever touch. Because when you do, it can cause serious internal hemorrhaging and even death. Lonomia obliqua can be found on the bark of trees in southern Brazil. So it's dangerous to lean against a tree there. Symptoms of Lonomia obliqua poisoning include severe internal bleeding, renal failure and hemolysis.
The genus Lonomia is a moderate-sized group of fairly cryptic saturniid moths from South America, famous not for the adults, but for their amazingly venomous caterpillars, which are responsible for a few deaths each year (e.g., ), especially in southern Brazil, and the subject of hundreds of published medical studies.
